Collingwood’s Beginnings

The first European settlement of the Collingwood neighborhood occurred in 1878 when George Wales moved onto a piece of land near present-day Kingsway, which itself was then a military trail built by Colonel Richard Moody to link New Westminster to English Bay.

Three years after Wales settled in the area, the Interurban railway tram was installed along Vanness Avenue, bringing many new residents and establishing a thriving community centered on Vanness and Joyce Street. Many of the Collingwood locals know of KCs plumbing, so we hear quite often that someone was referred whenever local Vancouver plumbers are needed.

Modern Expansion

The 1985 opening of the Skytrain elevated rail transit started another period of population growth for Renfrew-Collingwood, with the construction of high- and low-rise apartments, condominiums, and townhouses that boosted the area’s population considerably. Joyce-Collingwood Station – formerly Collingwood town center – is now the center of a booming residential core and is still being developed.

Additional development is planned as the City of Vancouver promotes increased urban density along Skytrain routes as a more environmentally-friendly way to accommodate a growing population. However, many Renfrew-Collingwood residents would like to see the area preserved as it is.

Buildings of Historical Significance

Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School, at the intersection of Joyce and Kingsway, has been guiding the educational development of Collingwood’s children since 1896. Another historic site along Kingsway is the 2400 Motel. Featured in many television shows, such as The X-Files, Supernatural, and Smallville, as well as numerous movies, including 3000 Miles to Graceland, The 2400 is a throwback to a bygone era of carhops and jukeboxes.

Residents and neighbors alike all eagerly anticipate Collingwood Days, held at the end of May each year. The neighborhood celebration of fun, food and entertainment has become a most popular family event.
